Slug moth caterpillar becoming a pupa
Insects undergo a radical transformation called metamorphosis in order to become full adults. There are two kinds of metamorphosis in insects: incomplete and complete. Incomplete metamorphosis, as seen in grasshoppers, occurs when juvenile forms (called nymphs) closely resemble adult forms. Complete metamorphosis, as seen here in this slug moth, occurs when juveniles look completely different from adults. It is believed complete metamorphic insects evolved from incomplete metamorphic ones.
